What is your identity in the digital world

Our lives have changed dramatically with the advent of the digital era. Digitalization has not only made life more easier, but it has also created an altogether new social sphere. Social media has become an essential component of our daily lives. Many people use social media to modify their identities. Some people excel in makeup artistry and market themselves as beauty gurus on social media. Others demonstrate their painting talent, establishing themselves as art influences. There are also folks that adore gaming and work as online gaming influencers. Despite possibly having distinct occupations in real life, they use their virtual identities to engage in online socialisation, digital content production, and numerous economic activities. How our online virtual identities are shaped, and whether the constructed virtual identities in the digital world might lead to self-fragmentation is the subject of this article.

On social networks, each one of us has the ability to create our own social accounts. We can set our profile pictures, names, post our thoughts, and share our daily lives. Social media provides a platform for people to construct and present themselves, allowing individuals to shape a satisfactory image of themselves in the digital world. This can lead to a fragmentation between one’s real-life self and their online persona, as seen in some clichéd plotlines in South Korean films. For instance, a regular working-class maid cleaning in the mansion of a wealthy employer gets exposed to the affluent lifestyle. Subsequently, she clandestinely wears luxury items and uploads pictures to her social media account, garnering comments that feed her vanity. This may result in a blurred self-awareness, leading her to believe she is part of the wealthy class and making it difficult to tolerate her ordinary life. This caused her to split. So every day when you see “happy” pictures of your friends on social media, do you ever wonder if the other person is “really happy” or just a superficial image? The following video shows how some of the images of people in the digital world are very different from those in real life. When some people share photos on social media, they often pretend that their “perfect” life is completely different from real life. The short video points out that people spend a lot of time and energy shooting images such as “natural” and “improvised”, but life outside the camera can be boring and even experience unpleasant things. So when we see other people’s profiles or posts full of exquisite, luxurious lives and enviable content, please do not have some bad feelings of melancholy or shame for our ordinary and ordinary lives. We should not feel ashamed of our ordinary lives. Social media is not a complete reflection of real life. We should not be fooled by the fake image created by others, they spend a lot of time to develop their virtual image in the digital world in order to get praise, they only show the best side to us, but the real value is not measured by the number of likes and comments earned by creating a perfect image on social media. Please don’t let online fakes dampen your confidence.

  1. “We should not feel ashamed of our ordinary lives”. I like how you mentioned this because I definitely agree. It’s quite a shame that we’re conformed to present an improved version of ourselves online for like sake of social acceptance and being seen as “perfect”. Me personally, I find it it’s so obvious when people are faking for the cameras however I do understand why it’s done. Self esteem issues plays a huge part in this which I hope can be tackled sooner that later.

  2. I really like your point of view, I think your point of view is very humanitarian, nowadays social media is moving so fast, we can see so many different lives on social media, but this is very easy to influence our values, but your point of view is great we should let the public understand that the digital world is virtual, and what’s in it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s real, and it’s the most important thing to live our lives well.

  3. I really liked satching the video in your post. It was informative, entertaining and interesting. It helped me to understand your view on this topic.
