Because algorithms are built on mathematics and data, many people assume they are neutral. But the truth is more complicated: algorithms can reflect, amplify, and reproduce human biases.
Algorithmic bias happens when a computer system delivers results that are systematically unfair or skewed toward certain groups. This usually comes from the data the system is trained on. If the data reflects inequalities or stereotypes from the real world, the system will learn those patterns—sometimes even strengthening them.
One famous example is facial recognition technology that struggles to correctly identify women and people with darker skin tones. These systems were trained mostly on images of lighter-skinned men, so their accuracy drops dramatically when encountering faces outside that group. Some early systems ended up preferring male candidates because they were trained on historical hiring data, which already favored men.
What makes algorithmic bias particularly dangerous is its invisibility. When a human makes a biased decision, we can question it. But when a machine does, the decision appears objective, logical, and data-driven. People tend to trust technology more than they trust individuals, which means biased systems can shape society quietly and powerfully.

We also need more transparency from technology companies: clearer explanations of how their systems make decisions, what data they use, and how they test for fairness. Finally, teams that design algorithms should be diverse, ensuring that different perspectives shape the system from the start.
